A Street Portrait Session cut short…

practice, practice, practice…

anne’s older brother, brian, called me a couple of days ago to see if i would be interested in coming out to the “scream the prayer” tour and daylong event to shoot some promo for a band that was swinging through town.  brian is pretty connected with several of the bands on the tour and he has a screen-printing shop in the admin offices of the club that was hosting the show… I knew that i could stage out of his office.  It would be a little unscheduled, trying to fit some promo work in between sets, but houston has a pretty developed punk/hardcore scene and crowds for a show like this could easily be a few thousand kids.  I figured that at the least, it would be a great place to practice some more street portrait work.

I tried something a little different this time.  I tend to prefer natural light over strobes and would much rather spend my time crafting and shaping sunlight with reflectors and silk than fire strobes.  I just feel like manipulating sunlight produces such smooth looking shadows… But, even if that is my “thing”, I don’t want to be dependent on it.  I need more practice with strobes.  I have a great kit now and knew that this would be a great opportunity to try it out.

A few images:

Well, this particular club is in a strip center and the thousands of kids parking and waiting in line to get in the door clearly irritated some of the other tenants.  Someone called the police and the fire marshall.  Well, as it turns out, the renovations done in the club (it used to be a bookstore) were not up to code (big surprise).  The club was shut down, all the kids were turned away, and as I was packing my gear could the hear screaming matches between the club owners and tour managers.  I think they tried to find a different venue, but who knows.

I didn’t shoot nearly as many images as I would have liked, however, was satisfied to try out the lights and make a few portraits along the way.

Let me know what you think…do you like the strobes?
